The police force is studying a plan to turn 24-hour convenience stores into 'safety kiosks' that can provide assistance to crime victims.

Inspector-general of police Ismail Omar revealed the proposal at a gathering with editors from the Chinese media, Sin Chew Daily reported today.

"We are planning to have a joint campaign with members of the public to fight crime. For example, the police intend to promote the concept of safety kiosks.

"Police will appoint some shops as safety kiosks. When crime happens, victims can immediately approach these kiosks for assistance," Ismail was quoted as saying.

Ismail said the police are also seeking the cooperation of taxi drivers not just to be the 'eyes and ears' of the police force but also to provide assistance to crime victims, such as sending them to the hospital and police station for free.
