The Home Ministry (KDN) will again engage 'Mat Rempit' in tackling crime under the United Against Crime initiative.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said it would be meeting the group and relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) soon.

"We are thinking outside the box. Just Because Mat Rempits have negative connotation doesn’t mean that we have to neglect them.

"They will face challenges, criticisms and cynicism but if they stay true to their belief and we guide them the right way, what is impossible can become reality," he told reporters after launching 'Konvoi Jalur Gemilang Ikatan Rela-KDN' programme in Putrajaya today.

The effort is a continuation of the ministry’s efforts involving stakeholders and authorities in fighting crime, including shopping mall owners and NGOs.

On the ‘Janji Bersih’ rally planned at Dataran Merdeka tonight, the minister assured that there were no safety concerns.

“If participants flout the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, our position is no different to Bersih 3.0 rally.

"If something untoward happens, the people can judge their action via video recordings."

Hishammuddin also hopes that those disputing the crime index to stop as they had been given various explanations.

“Let’s move ahead. We will prove it by our action. Whats important is not the index but for the public to feel safe,” he added.
