The current history curriculum for schools will be revamped and reworked in order to create "highly patriotic citizens", said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
"In order to fulfill the objective of creating citizens who are highly patriotic, the government is giving particular attention to the contents of the history curriculum for schools.
"... The government is coming up with a new history curriculum especially for secondary schools," said Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, when launching the Malaysian Historical Society’s 57th annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur today..
He explained the new curriculum will be based on the recommendations by the special committee set up to study the curriculum and text books for secondary school history subject.
The move, said Muhyiddin, is in line with the government view that history is an important aspect of nation building and the core to shaping the next generation.
The committee was established following public outcry over allegations that the subject in its current form favours the ruling party and Islam, at the expense of historical accuracy.
Formed in May last year, the committee is headed by Malaysian Historical Society chairman Omar Mohd Hashim while his deputy is Ramlah Adam, of Universiti Teknologi Mara and also a prominent leader of Malay rights pressure group Perkasa.
