Election Commission (EC) deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar has dismissed the recent claim of Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan that no electoral reform will take place soon.

NONE China Press in a report in today quoted Wan Ahmad ( right ) as saying Ambiga was talking nonsense and she was just splitting hairs.

He then listed the electoral reforms the EC has decided on for the next general election, such as the use of indelible ink, allowing overseas Malaysians to vote by postal ballot and allowing political parties on both sides to air their campaign videos, which he said were unprecedented.

Bersih in a statement on Monday accused the EC of dragging its feet in implementing genuine electoral reforms.

Wan Ahmad told the Chinese daily that the reforms required time to implement as the commission had to consider many factors.

'Jom Pantau' campaign criticised

In another report published by Malay daily Sinar Harian , Wan Ahmad warned Bersih not to disrupt the 13th general election with its JomPantau, a campaign to train citizens to become electoral observers.

Instead of facilitating the conduct of the election, he claimed, the campaign would only create various problems.

“We don't deny that it is the people's rights to be observers in the general election, but we afraid that it will create other problems for the EC and the enforcement authorities.

“We want to remind Bersih, which launched this campaign, not to disturb the conducting of this general election,” Wan Ahmad was quoted as saying in Sinar Harian Online today.

He reiterated that Bersih could have other agenda because it was established based on the interests of "a party".
