DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said his chances of defeating Gelang Patah challenger Abdul Ghani Othman has further ‘plummeted’ to 40 percent, should the Registrar of Societies (ROS) impose a ban on the party logo in the coming general election.

If that happens, Lim, who initially said he stood an even chance of coming out on top at Gelang Patah, questioned if he would now be able to restore the 50-50 odds.

He later revised that estimation to a 45 percent chance of him winning, when Johor Umno announced the appointment of the caretaker Johor MB as his opponent.

NONE “In the first place, my chances of winning Gelang Patah have plummeted further, from 50-50 before the announcement of Ghani's candidacy, to 45-55 with Ghani's candidacy and now 40-60 percent with the (possible) ban on the Rocket symbol in the GE,” he said in a statement today.

“Only the counting of votes cast on May 5 will tell which outcome will happen.”

He was referring to a letter the ROS had sent to the DAP, in which it stated that it does not recognise the party's top central executive committee (CEC), which was elected last year.

The letter came as the DAP is being probed over a " technical glitch " that occur during vote tabulation, and which resulted in a change in the line-up after it had been announced.

DAP had last night demanded that the ROS withdraw its letter by 3pm today, failing which the party is mulling contesting under the PAS banner in the peninsula and PKR banner in Sabah and Sarawak.

The contest for Gelang Patah between the two political bigwigs, described as the ‘Battle of the Titans’, is speculated to be one of the most watched parliamentary contests on May 5.
