Conversion case - right hand clueless what left is doing
YOURSAY ‘It is shameful that a religious organisation resorts to questionable actions that undermine family happiness.'
'Conversion case shows cabinet decisions toothless'
Aries46:
As the couple is still married under civil law, the religious conversion by the husband without the knowledge of the wife is a gross violation of her legal rights.
The obligation of the husband under the civil laws under which he married his wife is considered null and void, and tantamount to abandoning the family.
Similarly, unilateral conversion of the minor children secretly without the wife's knowledge is also a gross violation of her and the children's legal rights under civil laws.
The action of the authorities who did the conversion secretly tantamount to deceit and it is shameful that a religious organisation that is supposed to uphold the good virtues of the religion resorts to questionable actions that undermine the family happiness and harmony of a legally-constituted family.
Pahatian: Why, oh, why? Why should a parent subject his or her children to such a fate? It's his or her choice to convert to another religion, but please spare the children.
Spare a thought for them and also for the other spouse, since religion is a very sensitive issue in Malaysia. In other countries, it is not compulsory to be of a certain religious faith throughout one's whole life. Only in Malaysia.
Absalom: For a person to convert just to take advantage of some favourable religious law and gain custody of his kids, is downright evil and sinful. Does Islam condone this?
For its religious officers to support this and make it happen, I think, is also not right and to say this is unfair is an understatement.
IntegritySabah: If this government continues to take the holier-than-thou attitude, if equality and fairness is not in the government's policies, if race and religion is the government's initiatives, than don't expect Malaysia to become a developed country.
2 Tim 1:7: Have such conversions received the tacit approval of the regime? If not, why is it not doing anything to stop them? Right-thinking Malaysians recognise the gross injustice inherent in these "forced" conversions.
The MCCBCHST (Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism) ought to be appealing to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Dr Navenethem Pillay for redress and/or bringing the question to the International Court of Justice for adjudication.
Pputeh: The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.
DontPlayGod: A law should be enacted whereby a person can only leave his faith for another by the time he has reached 21 years, the age of majority. What does a small boy or girl know which religion to choose? The small boy or girl will just do as the parents demand.
Lokaikai: Nobody has the right to force any youth, before their adulthood, to embrace a particular religion with or without their parents' consent. This is a human right. So please learn to respect the young. Let them decide for themselves.
Overlord: I'm waiting for the statement that those who do not agree with such conditions to enable these conversions to migrate to other countries, or easier, to go into the jungle .
We can import anytime and anywhere those Indonesians, Sulus, Bangladeshis who do not require conversion to come in.
Swipenter: Playing the race and religion card has slowly turned our country into a "lawless" society. One can see the lopsided and biasness in handling cases involving a certain race and religion.
Name me one theocratic state which is not in a shambles. We can learn a lot from Pakistan and how playing with religion has made them a "lawless" society.
Malaysian57: Maybe it is time for the rulers, as the heads of Islam, to speak up on fairness and what should and should not be done as the PM is, as usual, silent on this issue.
Paul Warren: Justice for who? Justice according to whom? If you asked Perkasa they would say that this is justice. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad too would say the same. So?
Vijay47: This is not a matter of the cabinet being toothless, it is much more insidious than that and in keeping with Umno's policy in ensuring Malay and Muslim dominance.
Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali's candidature is a classic example - a facade, complete with the 'real' candidate being present at the nomination centre, was maintained of Umno wanting to field someone else. Yet at the hour of reckoning, Ibrahim slipped through. What action was taken against the 'official' candidate?
In Shah Alam, Zulkifli Noordin was the Umno candidate. Another slip-up? Hardly, it's all a part of a vicious strategy to hammer non-Malays into submission.
In respect of the latest display of religious cruelty, you can expect the usual litany of excuses - the government was unaware, it takes time for policies to filter down the administration chain.
Expect Utusan Malaysia to soon come out with a sustained campaign to alert Muslims as to how the non-Muslims are again challenging Islam and the Malay race.
Anonymous_ABG: An easy and costless way of solving matrimonial problem is to convert to Islam - this procedure will avoid common law protracted and expensive proceedings - and the shortcut is followed by unscrupulous people, thus belittling the religion.
Converting children of minor status is unacceptable as they wouldn't know and understand the procedures followed and this should be outlawed. When the children reach adulthood, then let them make their decision.
AngryBird: This is the "reward" for returning Umno-BN to power on May 5, 2013.
