, Anwar made light of the matter today, joking that “as always, they put the blame on me”.
"Blame me for the destruction of the building. Even if there is an election in Umno, it is also Anwar's fault,” he told a press conference.
Zainal Abidin had asserted that Anwar would the one “ most qualified ” to answer questions about the construction of Menara Umno, as he was state party head when a special ‘commencement of work’ order was issued even before building plans were submitted.
"He (Anwar) knows everything. We merely inherited this building and at that time, we did not have any positions," Zainal Abidin reportedly said.
A lightning rode at the top of the building had crashed onto Jalan Macalister during a freak storm, killing two individuals.
A probe has been opened into the incident.
The Malay Mail reported that the owners of Menara Umno are prepared to face legal action if negligence is established as a factor.
Umno had previously blamed Anwar for a number of issues, the most recent of which was the incursion into Lahad Datu in Sabah.
Then defence minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said three opposition leaders were behind the incursion, with suspicion partly falling on Anwar.
