Student activist Adam Adli, who landed in the limelight after bringing down a banner with the image of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the Umno headquarters, has been slapped with an indefinite suspension by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

Previously, he was suspended for three semesters since Jan 9, 2012.

NONE In a statement today, Adam said he was shocked to receive a letter from the university stating that he had been suspended again, with no time period specified.

In 2012, Adam was suspended for damaging UPSI's reputation and "endangering morals and public order". He later attempted seek a court order to reverse the suspension, but failed to obtain a judgment in his favour.

His suspension was supposed to expire this month.

'If UPSI doesn't want me...'

The latest suspension was communicated to him through a letter dated September 6, where UPSI vice-chancellor Zakaria Kasa informed Adam that the suspension was designed to "make way" for the latter's trial for violating the Sedition Act 1948.

"The letter stated that suspension was imposed with immediate effect and would only expire after the trial is over," said Adam.

adam adli raid 190513 Adam said that his suspension was unlawful as the university can only take action against him after a thorough disciplinary proceeding found him guilty of an offence.

"A mere written notice cannot suspend a student," he said.

Adam said that Putrajaya and UPSI were acting in a hypocritical manner and were trying to stop him for completing the final two semesters of his Education course.

For now, Adam said he will be seeking legal advice before deciding on his next course of action.

"If UPSI doesn't want me back, I might take other initiatives. I have forgone opportunities to study abroad because of my wish to continue studying in UPSI and complete my studies.

"However, I might re-evaluate whether to accept such opportunities from other institutions if there are no other solutions," said the 3.30 CGPA student.
