'Why the double standard, Ambiga?'
Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga has come under fire over her suggestion that MIC and MCA quit the ruling coalition following Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's controversial remarks.
Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga has come under fire over her suggestion that MIC and MCA quit the ruling coalition following Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's controversial remarks.
MIC treasurer Senator Jaspal Singh (left) questioned why the former Bar Council president did not make a similar call when Pakatan Rakyat is saddled with internal disputes.
"BN, for the future reference of Ambiga, is not her Sunday Social Club. We cannot be hopping in and out of it like excitable little bunnies," he said.
"It is strange that Ambiga does not think to offer her generous advice to Pakatan which appears to do nothing more than lurch from one internal crisis into another.
"PAS wants an Islamic state and DAP refuses it. Does Ambiga not consider this a serious enough issue for PAS or DAP to leave Pakatan?" he asked.
Despite her repeated claims of Bersih being non-partisan, BN leaders had always accused Ambiga and the electoral watchdog of being pro-opposition.
Ambiga's presence at opposition ceramah during the run-up to the general election had also drawn criticism but the Bersih leader claimed that she only spoke about voters' rights and that BN politicians did not invite her.
Following reports on Zahid's call for police to "shoot first" suspected criminals and giving crime a racial twist, Ambiga had questioned MCA and MIC’s position in BN.
"After hearing the home minister, I really want to know what MCA and MIC are doing in BN. Have some self-respect please and walk out!" she had said in a Twitter posting.
Earlier, Jaspal had also criticised the home minister over his remarks, stating that there was no room for summary executions in a civilised nation.
