Users on Twitter reacted with sarcasm and humour when reacting to news during the Budget 2014 that their teh tarik will likely be more expensive starting tomorrow.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had announced the abolition of sugar subsidy of RM0.34 along with another controversial measure, the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).

“No GST for sugar but it gets a direct price increase!,” exclaimed a Twitter user by the name of Sani.

“Diabetes will be reduced or controlled effectively tomorrow when the price of sugar goes up,” Twitter user Azmawi Azizan sarcastically remarked.

Another user using the Twitter handle @brianlian said he was supportive of the move but conceded that it will also mean price increases for other foodstuffs.

“Sugar subsidy reduction, this I support. But that means coffee shops and bakeries will increase their item prices,” he said.

Users also expressed their displeasure over the GST with humour, with one user with the twitter handle @ghazaliOhara making a direct appeal to the premier about GST.

“@Najib Razak, pakcik (uncle), may I ask? Do dowries get imposed GST? BR1M is not enough, please make some adjustment,” he posted.

Another user made an appeal to the fairer sex.

“Hope the women will not impose GST on wedding dowry,” said another user who uses the handle @fitrikosnan.

One more user by the name Norman said that the government was suggesting that the rakyat live off salted fish as it was among the items not imposed with GST.

“Salted fish not being imposed GST is a message (to) eat salted fish. Must save,” he said.
