The Dewan Rakyat has rejected an emergency motion to condemn the demands of the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs for the Universal Periodic Review Process (Comango).

NONE In presenting the motion, Noh Omar (BN-Tanjung Karang, left ) said the Comango demands are detrimental to the sanctity of Islam, and also that human rights should not supercede religion and culture.

Deputy speaker Ronald Kiandee agreed with Noh that the matter is of public importance and allowed him to read his motion.

However, he then rejected the motion on the grounds that it is not urgent.

Noh later said he had hoped for the motion to pave the way for the proposed muzakarah (dialogue) between PAS and Umno.

In a press conference at the Parliament lobby, Noh said that he raised the motion in order to gauge how PAS parliamentarians would debate on the issue.

“I wanted to see if the PAS MPs would talk in a similar way to PAS leaders outside of the Parliament,” Noh said.

“Now that this has not been debated, I assume the stand of PAS and Umno regarding Comango’s demands are the same,” he said.

In his motion, Noh said that the Comango demands were promoting LGBT rights and undermining the position of Islam in the federal constitution.

He also urged the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to investigate the coalition, which presented a paper at the United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process on Malaysia last month.

He claimed that only 12 out of the 54 NGOs were registered with ROS and thus should be investigated.
