PKR: Selangor to block toll hike at state highways

your say, YoursaySomebodyElse: Good government is to look after the rakyat and not to burden them. Good government is to ensure safety for their rakyat. Good government is to give great education to the rakyat.

Good government is to spend the rakyat money wisely and ensure all money spent will benefit the rakyat... I can go on and on. None of it is being done!

Onyourtoes: It is natural for some of us to criticise Umno-BN but I think it is also time to warn Pakatan Rakyat for their transience and lack of focus. To me, Pakatan is just reacting. Where is their relentless resolve to tackle some of the fundamental problems confronting us?

The review of independent power producers (IPPs) should be pursued relentlessly regardless of electricity tariff hike or otherwise. Nationalising the tolled highways should be pursued tenaciously regardless of the proposed toll hike.

Care for the environment should be Pakatan's enduring endeavour, not after the way the Selangor River water was polluted recently. Dismantling the monopolies and other distortions in the economy should be vigorously pursued irrespective of the price of sugar, cars, flour, rice and fuel.

The consumers have no rights and trading practices are exploitative in this country simply because market competition was never allowed to take root and flourish.

This is the most difficult period of our history - to galvanise the people, Pakatan politicians must show sacrifice. This is not the time for them to think of pay equivalent to the private sector. In so doing, you lose the moral authority to fight for the people.

Toffeesturn: A person using the Kesas now pays RM6 to get to Kuala Lumpur from Klang and RM6 to return, that is RM12 a day. We have seen daylight robbers getting caught and sent to jail. The same should be done with this government.

I think it is time for Pakatan to organise a mass protest, everything seems to be going up, and this after BN had promised to lower toll rates. Their mismanagement should not be allowed any further, we should stop them.

They won the last elections illegitimately and we all know that. The yellow shirts of Thailand have no legitimate cause, whereas we have one and it's is very legitimate.

Ratbatblue: When race preservation, religious chest thumping, banner changing and currying for favours/contracts are the main topics for discussion, instead of finding solutions to the country's severe financial woes, it is really heartening that one state government is taking some positive steps to try and help ease the burden of the common man.

When supermarkets are forced to keep baby's milk powder under lock and key to prevent theft, it tells of a once economically prosperous and proud country which has become a failed state due to total mismanagement by the powers-that-be.

I hope Penang follows Selangor's example and does its bit to aid the poor rakyat. Specifically, the advise to the public to use non-toll roads if they object to the toll hike smacks of arrogance on the part of the minister.

Bamboo: It's doable not to raise toll. But if toll is not raised, the elites will have less income in the shape of dividends for shareholders, bonuses for office holders in government-linked companies (GLCs).

People are treated as cows to be milked, and we are not even fat with all the price increases.

EvenSteven: See what I mean, PM Najib Razak? That's the way to run a country and not just get into Official Secrets Act (OSA) agreements with cronies to take away the people's hard-earned money.

Pakatan's formulae employed in the running of state governments does work as evidenced by how well Selangor and Penang are being governed. Take a leaf or two from Khalid Ibrahim's and Lim Guan Eng's style of governance and we should be able to move forward to new horizons.

BN's way is definitely not the way to go. Just take a look at our education system, for example, and you'll see that we are up to our eyebrows in crap.

Here we are struggling to make ends meet and our leaders are spending time and effort to persecute the Shiites.

Ferdtan: Not happy with the increase? Then Najib would tell you to tighten your belt; better still, use the belt to hang yourself. To him, one less Pakatan supporter is to the advantage of BN.

Here we are assuming that all those who supported and voted for BN are happy with the toll increase. The BN government is not going to listen to the rakyat. They have to increase the toll charges to benefit their cronies who operate the highway companies.

Such many other similar increases in prices are also to benefit their cronies to enable them to feed many of the Umno-BN's parasites.

Let's wait to see when these toll hikes would be announced and implemented. We can safely predict when it is imminent; that is, when the authorities suddenly make some controversial moves - the more outrageous the better - to distract public attention from the price hikes.

Could such an example be PAS deputy leader Mohamad Sabu being arrested for allegedly practising the banned Shiite teaching?

The BN government which has been governing the country for the past five decades is an expert at playing with the Malaysian psyche. The way to control the nation - when you are unpopular - is "distract, deceive and divide." They have done it before.

Now Umno is worried about the support of the Malays, their core supporters, when the prices hit them. So to distract the Malays from the key issue, they may play the religious card - the Shiite-bashing.

Of course, they have to manufacture lies to do so. The persecution and hatred orchestrated over the Sunni/Shiite issue to divide the people will make Umno popular - or at least ensure some the Malays not to abandon the party.
