PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution has rubbished a report claiming that the party leadership had asked Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to sign a resignation letter as chief executive.

"Nonsense, this is nonsense. The information did not come from an authoritative source," he told a press conference in Kajang today.

He was referring to a front-page report by The Star claiming that Abdul Khalid was asked to sign a post-dated resignation letter to pave way for PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to take over if he wins the Kajang by-election.

"Even though the newspaper claimed that it got its information form a high level source, I say it again, it's nonsense.

"An authoritative source should come from the party president, deputy president, vice-presidents, secretary-general (me), or others in the supreme council," he added.

Saifuddin claimed that the report quoting an anonymous source was aimed to create suspicion in the party.

The Kajang by-election, which was triggered by the resgination of Lee Chin Cheh to make way for Anwar to contest, is seen as an intervention to resolve the feud between Abdul Khalid and Selangor PKR chief Azmin Ali.

Anwar had hinted that he may become Selangor menteri besar, but has thus far refused to clearly confirm whether it will happen.

Saifuddin today was similarly coy, merely stating that Anwar’s planned entry into the Selangor state assembly is to "strengthen" the state.

"PKR's focus is to win in Kajang on March 23, see Anwar into the state assembly, strengthen Selangor as an important platform of Pakatan, and improve PKR and Pakatan's chances for Putrajaya," he stressed.

Meanwhile, Khalid himself also denied the report, stating there was no basis to such a claim.

“There is no such letter and I don't want to comment on speculative issues as I am focused solely on the impending Kajang by-election,” he was quoted saying by Bernama .
