PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was cautious not to take sides in the looming clash for the party's deputy presidency, saying that it was up to party members to decide.

"It is part of the democratic process of offering their services so that one, I leave it to the members," she told journalists after a meet and greet session in Kajang this afternoon.

She was responding to Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim who yesterday declared his intention to contest for the deputy president position in the party polls due in May.

His entry into the race looks likely to put him on a collision course with his rival and incumbent PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

Azmin has yet to declare his intention to defend his position, but in a statement today welcomed Khalid's candidacy.

Asked whether there were concerns that this possible clash of titans may result in a split in the party, Wan Azizah said it is a choice that has to be made.

"The members will have to see, big guns or small guns, that is the choice," she said.

Wan Azizah had only kind words for the duo, saying that they both have their own strengths.

"Both of them have many strengths so we (party members) will choose who they like and think can best bring the party to the next level," she said.

As for the PKR presidency, Wan Azizah had already indicated she will not defend the position.
