The recent Universiti Selangor (Unisel) survey finding that most Kajang folk do not want the Selangor menteri besar to be replaced “does not reflect the rakyat’s sentiments”, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said today.

Azmin told reporters at the Parliament lobby today that the poll was done based on a “small sampling”.

Azmin has been long seen as current MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s biggest political rival for the MB post.

PKR engineered the Kajang by-election to allow PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim to enter the state legislative assembly and eventually replace Abdul Khalid as MB, but the move fell through after Anwar’s sodomy conviction at the Court of Appeal.

Anwar’s wife, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is contesting the by-election, but Azmin insisted that the Kajang Move “is not over”.

“But the time is certainly not right (for the survey). We do not want to talk about succession right now,” he said.

Asked whether he is still interested in the MB post, Azmin remained coy, and said that it was not a decision for him to make.

“I can serve the state even without the post. I’m an MP and also an assemblyperson,” he said.

He said that at the moment, the party machinery and the people in Kajang should focus on returning the seat to PKR and ensuring a bigger majority for PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“After that, we will discuss what needs to be done next,” he said.
