The Selangor menteri besar must uphold Pakatan Rakyat's pledge to abolish highway tolls by rejecting the planned Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex).

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo in a statement today reminded MB Khalid Ibrahim that he had the power to stop the proposed toll highway project.

"As government of Selangor, we now have the power to reject Kidex.

"We must now do what is necessary in order to ensure that full effect is given to the pledges we have made to the people of Selangor in our election manifesto," Gobind said.

Considering Pakatan's consistent calls to abolish tolls on highways, he said, "It is difficult to see how the menteri besar could now agree to a toll highway in the form of Kidex."

Yesterday, a group of DAP state assemblypersons lamented the secrecy shrouding Kidex and the federal government's apparent unwillingness to look at alternatives.

They called on the federal minister in charge of transparency, Paul Low, to disclose the concession agreement for the RM2.42 billion project, and to release the traffic impact assessment (TIA) report that has been classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

The 14.9km elevated highway is to begin from the north, near the NKVE Damansara toll plaza, and cut through the heart of Petaling Jaya to join the Bukit Jalil Highway near Kinrara in the south.

Gobind said Selangor's traffic congestion needed solutions, and he openly rejected the idea of a toll highway as it would run contrary to Pakatan's manifesto for the 13th general election last year.

He said Khalid should therefore respond to the residents' memorandum of March 29 opposing Kidex.
