Even as Umno cheers on PAS to implement hudud in Kelantan, PKR has urged Umno to put its house in order by implementing hudud in Terengganu.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said this in response to Jamil Khir Baharom, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs, who had declared his support for PAS’ intention to table a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to remove federal obstacles to hudud.

“I advise Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said (left) to take the same Bill to Parliament if Jamil Khir is really sincere about the implementation of hudud,” he told a press conference at the PKR headquarters this afternoon.

“It would be better for Annuar Musa to also ask Ahmad to implement the enactment on hudud in Terengganu.”

Annuar, the BN’s Ketereh MP, has declared he would lobby his counterparts to support the PAS Bill.

Kelantan and Terengganu have introduced an enactment for hudud in the 1990s, when PAS was in power in both states, but it was not implemented because it is in conflict with the Federal Constitution.

Saifuddin said Pakatan Rakyat is aware of PAS' plans to table the Bill, but it was not finalised yet.

He said the PAS central leadership has discussed the matter but there was no decision on how to move forward. The party's political bureau will hold another meeting to discuss the matter soon.

"Until PAS gives us the latest update, as a component party of Pakatan, PKR remains tied to the old decision on hudud made by the presidential council at the end of 2010," he said.

There is no consensus yet on PAS' latest move and this will only be formed by the Pakatan presidential council when PAS is done with its own discussions and raises the matter with Pakatan.

        

The old consensus was ultimately an agreement to disagree, merely stating that Pakatan respects the hudud enactment in Kelantan (introduced before Pakatan's existence) and noting DAP's opposition to it.

However, Saifuddin acknowledged Pakatan cannot stop PAS if it tables the Bill.
