Najib a reformer? My toes are laughing!

YOURSAY ‘Najib never abolished the draconian laws, he only transformed them.’

Najib a 'reformer' with much to do, says Obama

Pemerhati: US President Barack Obama complimented PM Najib Razak by calling him a reformer.

The US embassy would have no doubt given Obama a long list of Najib’s other accomplishments and the many very able and talented officers that work for him.

For instance, Najib has people who are experts at making immigration records of Mongolians disappear and no one is able to find out who these experts are. In another case, his experts blew up a Mongolian with C4 and no one was ever able to determine who these experts were too.

Obama must be full of admiration and in awe of this leader who can get things done which even top magicians like Houdini cannot do.

Clearwater: Najib a reformer? That's rich. Najib is a pretender using reformation as a smokescreen to hide his real credentials - that of a spineless leader. Take note: when the going gets tough, he goes missing.

Armageddon: Najib is a transformer and not a reformer. He never abolished those draconian laws, he only transformed them.

LKT: Indeed, Obama is wrong to describe Najib as a reformer.

A reformer is someone who will do what is right irrespective of the cost that may need to be paid. A reformer’s loyalty is to the country first before loyalty to the party he is from.

A reformer will not cling on to power no matter what. A reformer will set in place a system that is fair and just which will not allow extremists from the left or right room to thrive.

Obama, Najib is not a reformer by any definition you and I as well as many right-thinking Malaysians understand it to be. Najib is a fake reformer.

Gerard Lourdesamy: I do not think that majority or minority views matter when it comes to good governance, fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and human rights.

The only controversial issues at present that may divide the country are all centred on religion namely the use of the word ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims, the implementation of hudud and the recognition of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights. Perhaps these matters have to be managed very carefully by the government.

But on issues like repealing draconian and oppressive laws, restoring constitutional freedoms and an independent judiciary, reforming the police, having an open press and media, more accountability and transparency in public life and becoming a party to the four core United Nations human rights conventions are things that Najib can do easily but he is unable to because he is subservient to the right-wing elements in Umno headed by former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Umno has an irrational fear of losing power if the people have more freedom and access to unbiased information.

Anonymous #01428088: A reformer? Ha, ha, ha, my toes are laughing!

Whatsup: Obama, don't you think it's a little way too early for you to practise stand-up comedy for your retirement? Najib the reformer? That's a good one.

Abasir: Obama may be the most intelligent, the most powerful politician on earth but it is clear he does not have the means to recognise a fake leader.

Najib, on the other hand, may not be as intelligent or as educated as Obama but he is an accomplished conman who can lie without batting an eye.

Swipenter: Obama, I would like to ask you one question, not really a question but a cliche. Have you heard of the cliche "Old wine in a new bottle"?

Najib's so-called reforms are nothing but hot air. In essence, it is just a rebranding exercise, much like bottling old wine in new bottles - a new look but essentially it is still the same old wine.

It is only him and his fascist Umno Baru party that insist that we are not ready for change. If we are not ready for change, how does Najib explain to you that he is heading a minority government for the first time in the history of our nation?

And how does Najib explain to you the escalating and more intense verbal violent threats against political opponents, dissenters and minorities since he took office?

Cogito Ergo Sum: While I agree with President Obama that more should be done, I must say that there must be a change of governance.

It's not good enough to spew platitudes for the benefit of the world's media. Some of the restrictions on freedom of human rights here are an abomination to the very concept of democracy.

How can you, as the president of the country at the forefront of democracy, keep silent on the sanctioned programmes of discrimination? Are the African Americans called the equivalent of 'pendatang' or immigrants in the United States?

Headhunter: Clearly, the president must have swallowed a lot of his own saliva before coming out with such a statement.

Doc: I total agree with President Obama that Malaysia should undergo reforms. The first thing to do to get this reforms underway is to get rid of Umno-BN - the stumbling block to true reforms.

Onyourtoes: Obama, did you follow ntv7 news? They just reported your visit but nothing on what you said about respecting the minorities and how a country will not succeed if half of its population is cast aside and discriminated against.

This is the “reformer” you are working with. He even ignored and censored your call for inclusiveness.

Casey: There is a distinction between a reformer and one who pays lip service to reform.
