'Use me to spoil Dyana's Chinese votes'
Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali has urged Gerakan to use a photograph of him together with DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud as campaign fodder in the Teluk Intan by-election.
Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali has urged Gerakan to use a photograph of him together with DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud as campaign fodder in the Teluk Intan by-election.
He said this was similar to PKR and DAP's strategy during the Kajang by-election where they deliberately circulated photographs of the MCA candidate along side Perkasa leaders.
"The purpose was to provoke Chinese voters and make them angry towards MCA and BN... Supposedly because Perkasa is racist and anti-Chinese. It is as if DAP is not racist.
"In the same grain, with this picture of me with Dyana and her mother Yammy (Samat), it is authentic.
"Chinese voters should logically be angry and not vote for the DAP candidate because DAP is linked to Perkasa," Ibrahim said in a text message to Malaysiakini .
Ibrahim added that if the photograph is circulated in the by-election but Chinese voters still support Dyana, then it is proof that fear of Perkasa and accusations against the NGO are untrue.
He also lamented Chinese-based component parties in BN blaming Perkasa for their ailing fortunes since the 12th general election in 2008.
“The fact is Perkasa was founded after the 12th general election, where MCA and Gerakan had already lost badly,” he said.
Checks found that the photograph was from an event at a Kuala Lumpur restaurant held last week in honour of Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
The event was hosted by Ibrahim to celebrate Razaleigh being awarded an honorary doctorate by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
Dyana had attended the dinner with her mother Yammy Samat, alongside many others who were once with Razaleigh in the Umno splinter party Semangat 46.
Ibrahim was a senior leader in Semangat 46 and won the Pasir Mas seat for the party in 1990.
The event was also attended by selected UiTM alumni including Utusan Malaysia editor Zaini Hassan who wrote about it in his column on May 14.
"This was a Semangat 46 reunion,” Dyana’s media relations team told Malaysiakini .
