Despite the popularity of DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, party supremo Lim Kit Siang remains pessimistic over her chances of winning Teluk Intan by-election on May 31.

 

“There’s no doubt that we will win hands down if the polling is on the social media...but they are not the voters in Teluk Intan.

 

“I'm sending the SOS...on how the netizens of Malaysia can come to our help, to land their dreams in this campaign, to tell the voters of Teluk Intan,” he told a press conference at the DAP by-election operations centre at Bandar Baru.

 

By that, Lim is hoping that the voters would initiate a "whirlwind" of political change in the by-election, and show the determination to break racial barriers by voting for Dyana.

 

Lim said DAP is the underdog in the Teluk Intan by-election and put the party's chances at 40 percent compared to 60 percent for BN.

 

The veteran politician said what cannot be denied in this by-election is the excitement and expectation following Dyana's candidature which had electrified Malaysians.

"It has triggered hope not only for youths and women but also for the population at large.

 

"Political analysts have described the DAP decision to name Dyana as candidate as a ‘brave’ one. This implies while the choice is commendable and good for the nation, it is unlikely to succeed as voters are still deeply-rooted in communalism."

Lim said the party believes the time has come for all Malaysians to go beyond communal politics.

 

“Malaysians should support an MP who is prepared to take a clear stand on issues of justice, freedom, rule of law and good governance. Malaysia can then become a united harmonious, progressive, prosperous, competitive and successful nation in the world.

 

“Gerakan president and candidate Mah Siew Keong stands to become a minister should he win. Dyana stands for saving Malaysia from becoming a disunited and failed state, which will affect the welfare and future of 30 million Malaysians and our children's children!,” he exclaimed.

 

The DAP leader further described this election as a battle between the future and the past, hope versus despair, and new politics versus old politics of race.

 

Lim stressed this was why he said the Teluk Intan by-election gives an opportunity for the voters to write history and create a miracle which they did in 1997 (when present Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran won a by-election), and use this to start a whirlwind of political change in Putrajaya.
