DAY 8 TELUK INTAN What’s happening in the by-election campaign in the parliamentry constituency of Teluk Intan? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.

10.30pm: A crowd of more than 2,500 people crowd turned up at the DAP ceramah at Anson Industrial Park, with five days left before polling day.

PKR de facto leader Anwar, Pas president Hadi Awang, DAP national adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng were among the speakers and the crowd greets them like super stars.

DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud's mother Yammy Samat also spotted in the crowd.

10pm: Malaysian pop singer Jamal Abdillah makes a special appearance at the BN ceramah at Taman Melor, Teluk Intan, and attracts some 1,000 people.

The crowd is mesmerised by Jamal's singing when he sings one of his famous song in the 80's entitles, Sepi Seorang Perindu .

Before entertaining the crowd with music, Jamal says that he feels happy to be here as he is born in Kampung Bahagia, a Malay village just two kilometres from Taman Melor.

3.55pm: Gerakan accuses the DAP of “covert racial campaigning” by using different campaign techniques for different parts of the constituency based on racial demographics.

“While buntings and billboards may seem trivial to some, the segmentation of the campaign between Changkat Jong and Pasir Bedamar is evident with different messages and photographs used in each area.

“This belies (the DAP's) claim to be an authentically Malaysian party,” Gerakan Teluk Intan by-election taskforce acting secretary Ivanpal S Grewal (left) said in a statement.

Ivanpal said DAP leaders also unneccessarily stressed its candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud's race, instead of explaining Dyana Sofya's vision for Teluk Intan.

1pm: DAP national adviser Lim Kit Siang expresses worry over a possible low turnout rate in Saturday's Teluk Intan by-election, as what took place in yesterday's Bukit Gelugor by-election.

Despite DAP's Ramkarpal gaining a tremendous triumph under a 56.04 percent turnout rate, Lim said the situation in Teluk Intan “is much more different”, as the candidate Dyana is an underdog, compared to Mah.

“If Teluk Intan too sees a 56 percent (turnout rate), then it's gone case for DAP,” Lim said.

He then asked the reporters around on who they they think would be the winner.

As some of the reporters just shrugged, Lim said, “If you (reporters) who are on the ground have no idea, then the situation is really unpredictable.

“Though some say many outstation voters will come back this weekend for the Dumpling Festival and they will vote, but it's hard to say.

“If DAP is to win in Teluk Intan, there must be a high turnout rate. I'm afraid that this will be an uphill battle for us.”

12pm: A single mother tells Malaysiakini Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil visited her house this morning with cash and supplies, canvassing support for BN.

P Panjalay lives in Taman Semarak and cares for her three mentally disabled daughters aged 33 to 36.

She is however unsure if the gifts are from BN or the Welfare Department.

10am: BN candidate Mah Siew Keong cries foul over his photograph showing him standing close to a Malay lady, reportedly being circulated on the Internet.

According to Sin Chew Daily , Mah slammed netizens for accusing him of committing sexual harassment by standing close to the lady while campaigning.

"This is such an unbecoming and misleading tactic," he said.

Mah explained that the photograph was taken at Taman Cicely, where his wife, Gerakan members and DAP candidate Dyana were on their visits too.

"My campaign team members took the same photograph from another angle. Please think mindfully and you will know, any reasonable man wouldn't be doing this in the public," he said.
