More than a dozen Muslim organisations urged a boycott today against chocolate-maker Cadbury after two of its products sold in predominantly Islamic Malaysia were allegedly found to contain pork DNA.

“They have betrayed us Muslims by putting ‘haram’ elements in the foods we consume,” Abu Bakar Yahya, a leader of Malay rights group Perkasa, said in Kuala Lumpur.

“We want Cadbury’s factories to be shut down immediately, Muslims nationwide must boycott all their products, we have the power to take down this giant,” said Nadzim Johan, president of the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia.

Cadbury’s Malaysia recalled two batches of Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond, which the Health Ministry found on Saturday to contain traces of porcine DNA.

“We are undertaking a full review of the supply chain to ensure all quality standards continue to be met,” Cadbury said. “We employ stringent quality procedures to ensure that our products are of the highest standard of safety and quality.”

Health Minister S Subramaniam said his office would conduct thorough checks on other Cadbury products sold in Malaysia.

The traces of DNA were detected during a periodic check for non-halal ingredients in food products by the ministry.
