YOURSAY ‘This may be a blessing in disguise, Najib will be called to testify.’
See you in court, Mr Prime Minister
Headhunter: This is a test case. If Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak succeeds in prosecuting Malaysiakini , it will certainly put an end to whatever little freedom newspapers and online media have left in this country.
It will also force many to go underground and turn the country into a dictatorship. Think carefully about it, all you people out there.
Anonymous #70881335: By taking action against Malaysiakini , Najib has already lost. He must have been badly advised.
As a Malaysian, I am deeply worried about a prime minister who is more concerned about what is written in a news portal than to tackle the huge problems facing the country.
Aries46: In suing Malaysiakini over its readers’ comments on his handling of the Terengganu menteri besar debacle , Najib has made a grave misjudgement and those that put him up to it have played a number on him.
As we can clearly see, there are those self-serving parasites who urge him on, do so merely to feather their own nests.
There have been numerous allegations and criticisms against Najib from way past even before his ascendancy to the premiership, such as the Scorpene submarine corruption scandal, the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shariibuu linking his aides, the Deepak Jaikishan-P Balasubramaniam scandal and many more.
Even as PM, there has been much condemnation from Malaysians for his failure to speak up or take proactive stand on pressing national issues or act against extremists fringe groups which have continually threatened peace and harmony and undermined national unity under the guise of protecting the Malay race and Islam.
He turns a blind eye at home while he trots around the globe proclaiming to be the ‘champion’ of global moderates.
Swipenter: I pray that the international media would take as much interest in covering the trial just like the way they covered the disappearance of the missing MAS Flight MH370.
Then our judiciary would be put under the international spotlight and the world would have a great opportunity to see how our court/judges work and behave, and the way Umno Baru and its president have been governing Bolehland.
This is going to be much "juicer" than the incompetence displayed by the authorities in the handling of the disappearance of MH370.
CiViC: This may just be a blessing in disguise, Najib is putting himself in court and will be called to testify.
While we know who the court will side with, it's a golden opportunity to bring out crucial matters, regardless of whether he answers or not, to the attention and scrutiny of the local and international public.
Kichi Bai: There are only two possibilities of how this issue will end. One, it will never even get to the courts. I agree with most of the earlier comments here that Najib is a coward.
So, how could one imagine that he would take the witness stand. It is a done thing that he would chicken out eventually. He would say in the spirit of wassatiyah (moderation), he was prepared to drop the case but with a stern warning to Malaysiakini not to repeat such things against him.
Two, if the judges are all subservient to him, then the courts are not free either. So, the judiciary will find every little excuse under the sun not to allow Najib to take the stand but still award the case to him in the end.
Malaysiakini will be slapped with huge damages that will put it out of business for good. But either way, this case is going to attract massive international interest for sure. It will be for the whole world to see what kind of a leader Najib is.
RR: Najib has been wrongly advised by his political and legal advisers. He should have been advised to reply and clarify the so-called allegations by Malaysiakini readers.
He has many political secretaries who could do this job rather spending huge sums of money on legal fees in this suit. Even his guru, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he won't sue Malaysiakini .
Telestai!: Najib is a reformer who hasn't started reforming. In term of transparency and accountability, he promises the world and delivers zilch.
I think Malaysiakini has been fair and objective in reporting news. Keep up the good work. As subscribers, we will not only support you morally but also financially.
Fair Play: I can't really tell what would be the final outcome of the defamation suit. But one thing is for sure - Malaysiakini might lose the battle, but there are many more battles to fight since the war is far from over.
And in the process, the momentum would be to the advantage of Malaysiakini because justice is always on the right side of the law.
:): I hope get to see prime minister’s face on the news more often now. I only remember seeing him on news about the RM1 chicken when MH370 gone missing, kangkung price drop when anti-price hike rally was happening, or his photo with panda bears when many more serious things are happening.
Let's see how he's going to face the media and start answering those long overdue questions when he go to court. This is so unlike him, coming out from the dark.
Editor’s note: Malaysiakini appreciates the suggestion by many readers on setting up a legal defence fund. We may do so sometime in the near future. Once again, thank you for all your support.
