DAP has challenged MCA if it will vehemently oppose Umno if its BN partner persists in recommending hudud in Selangor.

"Now that their partner in the coalition Umno has also mooted hudud to be studied in Selangor, will MCA now turn the 'Say no to PAS hudud' campaign to 'Say no to Umno hudud' campaign in Selangor?

"Will MCA now hold a demonstration in front of Umno Selangor headquarters to speak against this motion?" asked DAP Damansara Utama assemblyperson Yeo Bee Yin ( right ) in a statement this morning.

MCA had persistently blamed DAP for supporting PAS even as the latter pursues its move to implement the Islamic penal code in Kelantan.

However, it has consistently avoided commenting on the fact that Umno has publicly encouraged PAS to proceed and the federal government has even formed a technical committee with PAS' Kelantan government to study the matter.

Now that Umno Selangor has sprung their surprise move , Yeo asked if MCA was prepared to demonstrate against its own coalition partner.

"Following the issue, the MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon has issued a statement to call their partner for ‘meeting and discussion’.

 

"To show their sincerity against hudud, MCA Youth should not hesitate to launch similar campaign and demonstration against Umno in the event that the ‘meeting and discussion’ fails," said Yeo.

She also affirmed DAP's stand on hudud.

 

"As a state assemblyperson of Selangor, I would like to express my stand that multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious Malaysia should always be a secular country with the Federal Constitution as the supreme law of the land, as what our founding fathers had intended the country to be. 

 

"Therefore, to preserve the secular nature of the country, I will use my voting right in the Selangor state assembly to reject the implementation of religious laws irrespective of which religion," she said.   

 

Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh today announced in a press conference that she has approved the motion for a feasibility study on hudud to be put to a vote when the house meets again next week.

 

Pakatan Rakyat has 44 seats versus BN's 12 seats in the Selangor state assembly. All 12 BN seats belong to Umno.
