So cabinet decisions count for nothing?
YOURSAY 'When in doubt, confuse the public with contradicting statements...'
KJ: 'No unilateral conversion' policy stands
Lamborghini: Malaysia is descending into a situation of great confusion when its own cabinet ministers contradict one another. Who are we, the ordinary rakyat, to believe?
Who is the final authority on these "sensitive matters" that affect our fundamental constitutional rights?
PM Najib Razak, for the sake of our nation and for your own credibility, please speak up and stand up for the truth and for justice.
Malaysia888: Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, why don't you talk to your esteemed colleague, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, and tell him not to shoot off his mouth and display his ignorance?
2Kali5 : Jamil Khir's statement (that the government recognises unilateral conversion of minors) does not stand with any logic. Is he trying to say that what was good yesterday is no longer good today?
Multi Racial: If Najib is serious about his 1Malaysia, he has to take note of those racist or religious extremist cabinet ministers in his team and replace them in the next reshuffle.
These ministers are opportunists and no good for Najib's administration and the country. The earlier Najib gets rid of them, the better it would be.
Factnot fiction: Conduct classes for ministers on Malaysia's constitution so they will stop embarrassing the country. If they can't pass a test on the constitution, sack them.
JMC: Khairy, you seem to have great deal of logic and wisdom, which you seldom use. For the sake of the people and the nation, please be consistent and stand up for moderation against those out to destroy the country with their myopic ideas.
Dearpixel: Can there really be freedom of religion if parents can choose the religion of the child? Does the child not have the right to freedom of religion? Can we declare what religion a person is without their personal consent?
Could we get into any sillier situation than this? In Malaysia, tomorrow always has something sillier for us to deal with than today. Just wait and see. It's a land of surprises.
Appum: KJ, do you see our nation slowly disintegrating before your eyes? You have to decide whether you want to be a politician first or a patriot first. Some politicians are not bothered if the country goes down the drain, so long as they accumulate their wealth.
But a patriot is one who would rather be destroyed than destroy the country. I'm sure you are acutely aware of this. Help the country or help yourself. Take your pick.
Abasir: When Persatuan Hindraf chief and former deputy minister P Waythamoorthy made a statement that did not reflect the views of the cabinet, he was publicly reprimanded and told to 'toe the line'.
But when Jamil 'Taliban' Khir makes outrageous statements, there is no such reprimand for him. I know why - Waytha does not belong to the ‘ketuanan’ race. He is, to them, just another Indian.
Mano: This is a ‘sandiwara’ (shadow play) very often put up by BN when forced into a corner.
This method of trying to appease both sides of the divide has been so systematically put in place that the ordinary rakyat are often taken for a ride.
BN caught in this situation is their own doing for not having put things right - there is no such thing as unilateral conversion.
Malaccan: This is standard practice in the current cabinet. When in doubt, confuse the public with contradicting statements and let the issue die out.
Cry, My Beloved Country: Do cabinet decisions and directions count for anything?
'Conversion stand leaves non-Muslims unprotected'
Raja Chulan: Yes, non-Muslims are indeed unprotected based on the many statements and actions of Islamist extremist groups mushrooming in Malaysia lately.
Also, there are reasons to fear that they are indeed unprotected based on the government staying silent and doing nothing to correct this situation.
I urge NGOs and civil society members to call upon the United Nations human rights body and other international organisations to rein in the government to correct this worsening situation here in Malaysia.
Not Smart: It looks like Jamil Khir is the central issue to the whole problem. I wonder how he has been advising the government on Islamic matters. It takes a non-Muslim to highlight the major translation error that lead to the confusion.
I wonder if he was already aware of the error and deliberately kept silent, or was genuinely not aware. Looks like there is a major issue of incompetence and lack of capability here.
Negarawan: Jamil Khir is a dud minister, and is one of the agents of disharmony in the country. This does not befit a minister in the government of multi-racial, multi-religious Malaysia. He should pack his bag and join the Taliban.
Again, where is the lame PM? Is the PM keeping silent to punish the non-Malay and non-Muslim electorate?
Asuka: Mr Prime Minister, please remove Jamil Khir from making all sorts of statements that are contradictory to cabinet decisions and the Federal Constitution.
He is causing ill feelings and disunity in Malaysia's multi-racial society.
Bystander: There is no need to read the laws, just interpret the way you deem fit.
