So police need court orders to carry out duty?
YOURSAY ‘IGP, if you can carry this out now, why couldn’t you comply earlier?’
IGP directs cops to arrest dad in custody dispute
Vijay47: Before we start dishing out the ‘Service To Mankind Award’ to Khalid Abu Bakar, our great inspector-general of police (IGP), I would like to ask him what has happened lately for him to now issue the directive to the Perak police to arrest the K Pathmanathan @ Muhd Ridhuan Abdullah (the father of the child)?
From what I understand, the status has always been quo, that is, there was a court decision ordering the child to be returned to her mother.
If you can carry out this decision now, Khalid, why could you not comply earlier? You got lost and strayed from your pious middle path ?
Proarte: What does Perkasa information chief Ruslan Kassim have to say about this directive from the IGP?
Won't he regard this as an affront to the 'supremacy of Islam' as the syariah courts have awarded custody to Muhd Ridhuan and allowed for the unilateral conversion of his children?
The civil court has declared the syariah court to be inferior and ordered the police to adhere to the civil court ruling unless they wanted to face contempt proceedings.
Given the highly-charged politics of the case, the IGP must at least be congratulated for finally relenting and doing the right thing.
Ruslan Kassim threatened to decapitate the head of anyone undermining Islam so will the IGP please make sure he surrounds himself with more bodyguards in case Ruslan decides to do the dirty deed on him.
Of course, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would argue there was nothing wrong in threatening decapitation and spilling blood. It would only be a crime if it was actually carried out. Does Ahmad Zahid have a death wish on the IGP?
Just An Ordinary Malaysian: The IGP should have acted earlier and resolutely. He should have put his foot down on the rule of law that there can be no court higher than the civil and federal courts.
Once one take the 'middle ground' between religious courts and federal courts, this is opening a big explosive keg of worms.
There is no turning back, which is sadly what is happening in our country. There are no grounds for logic and reason when it comes to concluding matters with opposing religious beliefs.
Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew had the foresight to banning religion in political discourse. One had the right to follow his/her religious belief but in a multi-cultural country that is Singapore, religion which clearly associated with race policies cannot be guided by religious beliefs.
Unfortunately the public has little to say in election of heads of government and enforcement agencies, I only hope the people entrusted with executive powers can deliberate tough questions and make the right decisions for the progress of all in this country.
Fairnsquare: When we need court orders to get the police to do their work, we are a sick country and seriously in trouble.
Just_A_Rakyat: It's simply idiotic for the police to defy a court order. If any of them feel they cannot fulfill a duty because of religious consideration, they should resign from their position.
JMC: Is the IGP's change of mind a ‘ sandiwara ’ (drama) or sincere? Very few believe he is genuine.
Ipoh High Court judge Lee Swee Seng must be commended for her uncompromising stand on the law. I hope more will follow her footsteps.
She may be put in cold storage but never mind, she had done her duty without fear or favour.
P Dev Anand Pillai: Good, finally something positive is taking place. What is clearly needed in cases such as this is when couples divorce, fathers must be encouraged actively by the courts and the system to visit and partake in the development of the children.
Mothers should encourage this and not put conditions to visits by the father, it is when conditions are put that makes the fathers take very drastic measures like this. It is very common in failed Indian marriages. It is a escape route in the law.
Therefore it will be best if active participation of estranged husbands are encouraged instead of just taking them as ATM machines.
Mob1900: The father who had a head start thanks to the IGP might already be out of the country with the daughter.
The fact that the IGP failed to carry out his duties when tasked and was openly defiant of court orders should be the source of his removal. Why is there no consequences for his actions?
Not Smart: Finally the IGP had to carry out the orders, which he should have done immediately. This is a very shameful of the IGP, as finally he had to lick his wound.
However, it is interesting that he only acted after the Federal Court's decision on the use of the scared word .
This could be a strategy to pacify certain groups of people first before taking the action. Therefore it can be deemed that the law gives priority the certain group of people rather all the people.
LKT: I think the IGP has finally realised that he is about to be held in contempt of court and be thrown in jail. With his tail between his legs, he has decided to be seen to be acting (how sincerely is the question) on the High Court order.
Personally, I still think he should be sacked hencewith from his post for all his failures and abuse of power since he was the IGP and thrown in jail.
Imissthegoodolddays: Oh, come on people, don't you guys think that for someone as highly positioned as the IGP to make a certain decision, it will require him some time and a whole lot of process to deal with. Give him a break, will ya?
