Goodness gracious, and he was chief justice?
YOURSAY ‘To put it in a nutshell, Abdul Hamid believes in Ketuanan Melayu.’
NUCC raps ex-CJ over 'Malay traitor' remark
Ksn: I cannot understand the simple logic as to how the former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad came to the conclusion that being a member of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) makes him a traitor to the Malay race.
All level-headed persons want unity and harmony among our people. What has he got against national unity, I wonder.
Can one imagine the logic, the outlook and the narrow-mindedness of someone who was the chief justice of Malaysia. It is beyond comprehension, even for ordinary folks, let alone a judge.
NuckinFuts: It's good that he turned down the NUCC post. It would be disastrous for such a narrow-minded person to head the council. Good riddance!
Malaccan: When Abdul Hamid, who has a demonstrated flawed reasoning and skewed value system, is leading the Malay rights group Perkasa-sponsored National Unity Front (NUF), everyone can fully appreciate how devoid the panel is of integrity and goodwill.
Their idea of unity will be based on a single race and religion, and the fruit will be a divided nation where the minority is enslaved, cowed and intimidated before a master race. Such is their belief of what Islam teaches them.
I commend the NUCC for responding openly and boldly to such scurrilous insinuations against the council and especially their Malay Muslim members. Lies must be exposed quickly and comprehensively before it spreads its poison and is seen as the truth by default.
The NUF is so far beneath the NUCC.
RR: Abdul Hamid has not only brought shame to NUCC and to all right-thinking Malaysians, but with his treacherous words against others esteemed members of NUCC, he brought disgusting shame to the prestigious high office of chief justice that he once occupied.
Gerard Lourdesamy: To put it in a nutshell, Abdul Hamid believes in ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ and is misusing Islam to persecute and subjugate other races and religions.
The special position of the Malays and natives of Sabah and Sarawak does not mean that they are preferential or privileged citizens over all other citizens in the country.
Article 153 is there to allow for affirmative action and positive discrimination in very limited circumstances but not in violation of other articles in the constitution that prohibit discrimination and inequality.
The status of Islam as the religion of the federation does not mean that non-Muslim religions (apart from propagation to Muslims) have to be restricted in practice and observance to conform with Islamic sensitivities and beliefs.
There is nothing in the draft NUCC bills that is anti-Islam, anti-rulers or anti-Malay race. The fact that Abdul Hamid has aligned himself with Perkasa shows that he has lost all credibility and moral authority and is only motivated by hate.
Odin: PAS MP Mujahid Rawa, you can't reason things out with the likes of Abdul Hamid. Their feeble minds are saturated with hatred for other races and religions, and drugged into delusions of supremacy over all else.
Casey: NUCC is showing a good example by speaking up against extremism. The majority of the Malays and Muslims in this country are level-headed.
The way to marginalise extremism and bigotries is to empower the liberals, the moderates, and all factions of the society that form what is middle Malaysia.
Multi Racial: One by one we came to realise how many mistakes BN government had made. The appointment of Abdul Hamid to highest office in the judiciary was certainly wrong. I wonder whether he lied or he simply turn chameleon.
As judge, he has to be impartial and neutral. His racist remark made you wonder how he got there in the first place.
LAWofKARMA: I hope he has not made any decision or judgment based on his ‘racist’ emotion when he was the CJ.
Prudent: The Malays and all other communities are better served if they conform to universal values of justice as found in the United Nations' Charter and expressed through the Commonwealth judiciary system, among others.
If they stick to narrow communal/racial interests at the expense of justice to others, they will finally pay a price that will be far, far in excess of any gains derived from injustice done to others as a result of pursuing their communal interests.
Matteropong: We thought an ex-CJ has wide wisdom on humanistic issues but it turns out otherwise, so future CJs must be carefully selected.
Anonymous_1ingrate: I wonder how could this man be chief justice. No wonder our judiciary system has gone down the gutter. Abdul Hamid is certainly a shameless troublemaker whom Umno called a towering Malay.
He should have been Perkasa president in the first place instead of being chief justice.
Ratbatblue: Why must the NUCC explain their stand to this man, who heads an alternative group, the NUF?
By this man's very own deduction, all the Malays in the NUCC were therefore "traitors" to their race.
He opted out because he knew that he and his kind of reasoning would not have made any headway in a mixed group which he could have had potential trouble dominating. Thus he joined Perkasa’s group. Did anyone expect this group to be really multiracial?
It would just be like any of the myriad Muslim NGOs in all but name, since there were a few non-Muslims in it.
Maybe it would be prudent to review this man's judgments while he was on the bench. With such overt racist sentiments, no one could be faulted if they thought that his pronouncements could be tainted and racially biased.
Abasir: This man, whose occupation of the CJ's seat sullied it forever, is obviously offended by the fact that "the proposed bills... have specific focus on fighting bigotry".
Starwars: I never expected such remark from an ex-chief justice who himself is married to a Chinese and is expected to foster racial integration in Malaysia. A very sad day for Malaysia indeed.
Azhar: It is truly alarming that a person with such perverted views was an ex-chief judge of the Federal Court. In fact, his views as reported are truly anti-Malaysian.
How could he even have been appointed to such a high office? Is there no screening before such appointments are made?
He is certainly a disgrace to those judges, whom I believe to be a minority, who are truly worth their salt. At his level, he would most likely have infected much of the system. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Toffeesturn: And he was a judge. Need I say more?
