Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo believes that there was nothing seditious in the comments made by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang on the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

Gobind said there was nothing wrong in criticising a judgment, especially if the criticism was made to correct defects.

“Many have spoken on Teoh’s death. It’s difficult to understand why the focus is on none other than Lim,” he said in an interview with Malaysiakini today.

“As far as I am concerned, he has committed no offence.”

Lim today was questioned by the police for an hour-and-a-half at the DAP headquarters.

Gobind however said he would not be surprised for Lim ( left in photo ) to be prosecuted since the “Sedition Act has been used freely”.

As such, he said the incident will set a “dangerous” precedent where the country will have a scenario of the public being reserved in expressing their views.

“Charging Lim under the Sedition Act will be a step in the wrong direction. We have to accept that the country is moving forward in terms of public discussion.

“There’s going to be a divergence of views and varying positions. And there is nothing wrong with that.”

He added that Malaysia will also be seen as a country which wants to control criticism.

“And that is not right. If the law allows for judgments to be criticised, then it is not proper for people to be charged for doing so,” he said.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar last week confirmed that the police will investigate Lim under the Sedition Act.

Khalid said Lim’s statement was an attempt to influence the people that Teoh’s death was due to murder.

In his article titled, ‘Malaysians will not rest until justice is done for the killing of Teoh Beng Hock’, Lim had questioned why no arrests had been made for the killer of the Selangor exco member’s political secretary.
