Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there is no directive for the police to suspend its investigations pertaining to the Sedition Act.

"The police's duty is to carry out investigations when there is a police report.

"And when (the probe is) completed, the investigation papers will be sent to the Attorney-General's Office (to determine further action).

"The prosecution duty is under the AG's office," he told reporters.

Zahid was commenting on Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail's ( right ) statement that sedition charges will be reviewed.

Since last month, there have been a string of sedition charges against opposition politicians, an academic and a preacher.

'We have to be moderate'

On another matter, the minister also advised Malaysians against participating in the war in Syria thinking that it is a "jihadist" cause.

"I too have been arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA), but I never had the intention to go to Syria to join them," he said, referring to reports that there were five ex-ISA detainees in Syria.

"If we sympathise with the situation, we can give humanitarian aid, not be involved with any parties there," he added.

Zahid said that if something unwarranted happens, it would create a negative image and give the impression that Malaysia is training terrorists.

"We have to avoid being extreme left or extreme right. We have to be moderate," he said.
