A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Pekan Baru, Ipoh for alleged cheating by offering non-existent jobs via Facebook.

Perak CCID chief Supt Maszely Minhad said the suspect was arrested at 5pm yesterday after police received a report from a 22 year-old victim.

The victim befriended the man via Facebook on Sept 10.

“The suspect deceived victims with promises of non-existent jobs such as technicians, ticket agents or administrative staff at KL International Airport (KLIA),” he told reporters in Ipoh today.

The suspect told the victim to contact a man named ‘Datuk Siva’ for the job promised.

“The victim became suspicious when the suspect asked that RM1,300 be deposited into the ‘Datuk’s’ account.”

Maszely said police seized five ATM cards and a mobile phone believed used in these activities.

“One of the ATM cards seized has the same number with the account number given to the victims.”

The suspect used the same method to cheat individuals in Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang and charged between RM300 to RM2,800.

He was believed to have committed nine cases of fraud with losses totalling RM14,850.

The suspect was remanded until Sunday to help investigation. The case was investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
