More than 600 low-cost apartments meant to be 'transit homes' for low-income young couples is now ready for application, said the government.

Housing, Local Government and Urban Well-being Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the units in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, will be ready for occupancy starting December, at a rental rate of RM250 a month.

The minister said the pilot project is to cater to “newly-married young couples who work in Kuala Lumpur”.

“The idea is to provide them with temporary homes for two years before they find their own permanent home,” he said in an Instagram post.

Rahman was later quoted by Bernama as saying that the 632 units are at Blocks L and M of the Bukit Jalil low cost (PPR) flats.

He added that RapidKL has also agreed to provide feeder buses to connect the flats with the Bukit Jalil LRT station, on the Ampang Line, starting December. The buses will run at a frequency of every 30 minutes.

Applications are open at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) E-Perumahan website for Malaysian couples who have been married for less than one year and are aged 30 and under.

They must have a joint income of RM3,000 and below and be employed within the Klang Valley.

The proposal was first made by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in his policy speech at the Umno general assembly last year.
