Pakatan Rakyat will agree to a proposed increase of MPs' allowances if the rate is reasonable, said opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

 

He said this is because the MPs' allowances had not been revised for decades.

 

"I am waiting for the government's proposal, but in principle, we will agree if the hike is at a low and reasonable rate," he told Malaysiakini when met at the Parliament lobby today.

 

In the 2012 Budget, Prime Minister Najib Razak had proposed to review the MPs' salaries, but Pakatan opposed it at the time.

"Previously I had made a statement rejecting it because the raise was too high," said Anwar.

 

"But since there has not been a hike in decades, we will agree to it, but at a rate that we find reasonable."

Najib is expected to table the adjustments to the MPs' allowances at the coming budget session in Parliament.
