Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai has reportedly denied cabinet had made a decision on government inaction against Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali over last year's urging to burn Malay language Bibles.

According to Sin Chew Daily today, Liow said cabinet did discuss the matter at its meeting last week but said no decision was made.

Liow reportedly called claims that the cabinet had made a decision misleading, although he did not name any individual making the claim.

On Saturday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri ( right in photo ) told the media that she will not be asking the Attorney-General's Chambers to review its decision not to act on Ibrahim.

She added that cabinet after its meeting on Friday has made a decision on the matter, but would not reveal the details.

'Was one minister sleeping?'

Meanwhile, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said that the conflicting information given by Liow and Nancy on the matter is misleading and confusing the public.
 
“How could two ministers have different understanding as to whether the cabinet had made a decision or otherwise?
 
“Was one of them sleeping?” Kok ( left ) asked in a statement today.
 
She said that even though Liow had rebutted claims that a decision was reached, he also needs to explain why the Cabinet failed to decide in the first place.
 
“He should explain if he was happy with the discussion,” she said, adding that Liow also needs to explain the real reason why Ibrahim wasn't charged.
 
Last year, in a press conference in Penang, Ibrahim called on Muslims to “protect their religion” by seizing and burning bibles including Malay language ones.
 
On Oct 8, in a written reply to DAP Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng who asked why Ibrahim was let off the hook for his actions, Nancy had said that the Perkasa chief's statement was meant to “defend the sanctity of Islam”.

 

Her answer was met with heavy criticisms and on Oct 18, she defended herself by saying that she had merely read out the findings prepared by the Attorney-General's Chambers in her answer to Lim.
