The Selangor mufti said that he will only meet with NGO Sisters in Islam (SIS) after a decision has been made on the judicial review application made by the latter.

Selangor mufti Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid said he fears that the meeting might be considered prejudicial to the case if they met now.

He was commenting on the urging by Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali for him to meet SIS over the fatwa ruling by Selangor Religious Affairs Council (Mais), which SIS is challenging in court.

SIS filed a judicial review last Friday against  the Selangor fatwa committee, Mais and the Selangor government over a fatwa labelling the NGO as "religious deviants".

The fatwa gazetted in Selangor on July 24 declares those subscribing to "liberalism and pluralism" as "deviating" from Islam, citing the NGO as an example.

Earlier today, the Selangor sultan told Muslims not to be hasty in criticising a particular fatwa without a deeper understanding of it.

"I urge the Muslims not to be hasty in critising a fatwa without understanding it fully," Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said when opening a syariah penal code seminar in Shah Alam today.

“Muslims should be confident with full sincerity and be united in thinking to understand the teachings of Islam, regardless of differences in ideologies and political interests.”

The sultan added that this is because a particular fatwa is decided upon by the fatwa committee, which consists of those who are knowledgeable in their particular areas of expertise.

“I am confident that all the contents of the Quran, including the rules and laws as set by Allah, have goodness and wisdom for all.

“A particular fatwa is not decided upon by the mufti alone but by the fatwa committee,” he said.
