Organisers of the ‘Switch Off ‘14 - Program Interrupted’ campaign has denied accusations that it is organising an illegal rally tomorrow.

Not only that, Federation of Screen Guild Malaysia (Gafim) president Jurey Latiff Rosli said those who choose to participate at home by switching off their television for three hours will also get to save electricity and spend some quality time with their family.

“We are not doing anything wrong, we are just gathering in large numbers with other industry players that night to show support for the campaign.

“We don’t want to fight anyone and just have a casual meeting, but some people have portrayed the campaign negatively,” Jurey ( left ) told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

The gathering is to be held at Dataran Zoo Negara from 8pm until 11pm tomorrow, featuring poetry recitals, sketches about life in the creative industry, musical performances, and a speech by Jurey, who is heading the campaign with a coalition of several industry groups.

The venue is adjacent to the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) headquarters.

Among the groups’ demands include higher fees for creative works, introducing a Creative Content Industry Act, fairer intellectual property laws, and fairer allocation of TV programming slots with emphasis on having 70 percent local content.

The organisers are calling for viewers at home to show solidarity for the campaign by switching off their television from 8pm until 11pm tomorrow.

Jurey said based on the response on Facebook and Twitter to the group’s campaign, he is expecting over 1,000 participants to attend the gathering outside Finas.

“The night of Nov 11 will be a night for us to gather. I think this is the only program which industry players have been waiting for so that we can unite to face an issue.

“Members of the public are also invited. Don’t be afraid or worried because our campaign has obtained approval from the authorities, so there are no problems. This program is not a demonstration or anything of the sort,” he said.

Among the local celebrities expected tomorrow include Kopratasa, Tarmimi Siregar, Fauziah Nawi, Zulfekar, Min Yasmin, Keena, Salwa Razak dan Ebi Saifol.
