The Election Commission (EC) must meet with the Penang government to ensure the smooth handling of the electoral redelineation process, the Penang delineation managing committee says.

Parliamentarians Mujahid Rawa (PAS-Parit Buntar), Ng Wei Aik (DAP-Tanjong) and Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru), said in a joint statement yesterday that as the delineation of Penang is a big matter, the EC must hold discussions with the state.

“The redelineation of parliamentary and state seats involves major changes to the electoral areas which involves 12 million voters.

“We are ready to advise and help the EC with the process in a fair manner. Hence, it is essential for them to meet with the state to make sure things go smoothly,” the MPs said in a statement today.

“However, so far the EC has

yet to contact us or the state to discuss this. While we await the EC's reply, our preparatory work will begin in December,” said the committee members who were named by the state on Sept 26.

The committee will launch two roundtable discussions in December to collect feedback from the people, along with their aspirations, in terms of the redelineation of the constituencies.

The first session will be held at the Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang at 8.30pm on Dec 17, while the second will take place at Kompleks Badawi at the same time the next day.

”Both sessions are open to the public as well as NGOs and politicians who would like to provide input to the committee,” the MPs said, adding that EC representatives were welcome to attend the sessions to explain the redelineation process in greater detail. 

The committee also urged the EC to hold discussions with them as soon as possible.
