PARLIAMENT The government has finally revealed the exact quantum of allowance hike for MPs, at 69 percent effective next year.
According to an amendment to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980 tabled today, the allowance of MPs will be increased from RM6,508.59 to RM11,000.
As for senators, under the amendment, their allowance will be increased from RM4,112.79 to RM7,000.
The hike comes after bi-partisan discussions on the matter as elected representatives had not received a hike since 2002, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim ( left ).
The allowance hike was last discussed in 2011 but was scrapped then due to fierce objection from the opposition, which cited the high increase as unreasonable.
Under the amendment, the Dewan Rakyat speaker and the Dewan Negara president will also see their salary increased from RM14,907.20 to RM20,000 - a 34 percent increase.
As for the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker and Dewan Negara deputy president, their salary will increase from 10,847.65 to RM16,000 - an increase of about 47 percent.
As a result of the increment, the government estimates it will incur an additional cost of RM14,751,981.36.
The amendment is expected to be passed without opposition as both sides of the political divide have expressed support for the hike.
