PKR has accused Wanita Umno delegate Mashitah Ibrahim of not being interested in the truth about whether alleged Quran burning in Kedah had taken place, but merely wants to incite hate against the Chinese community.

"Mashitah’s arrogant response to DAP’s police report made against her yesterday, and even challenging the DAP to sue her over her remarks that the chinese had burned the Quran - despite having been pointed out to her by the press of MB Mukhriz Mahathir’s earlier statement that no copies of the Quran were burned - shows that she has no interest in finding out the truth.

"It is obvious from her response she doesn’t care if the Chinese didn’t burn the Quran," said Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung ( left ) in a statement after a press conference yesterday.

He accused her of merely being interested that her speech "incited the Malays to stand up and defend Islam and the Malays against such acts".

Gooi pointed out that if the Umno delegate truly believed in the alleged incident that she related during the Umno annual general assembly this week, she would have made a police report on the incident.

"Clearly, Mashitah Ibrahim (the Umno Baling Wanita chief) owes the Chinese community in Kedah an apology for spreading lies ... that the Chinese community had burned the Al-Quran in Kedah," said the PKR parliamentarian.

He added that her actions were “totally inexcusable” as Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir had already  clarified that the Quran was not burnt but torn up by a mentally unsound Malay man.

Gooi also asked the Kedah MB to take action against Mashitah and make her apologise for her statements.

“I therefore urge MB Mukhriz as Kedah Umno chief, to act on behalf of the Chinese community in Kedah, to discipline and put Mashitah on a tight leash, to rein her in, and make her apologise for the wrong she has committed against the Chinese community in Kedah.

On Wednesday, Mashitah during her speech at Wanita Umno assembly related the issue of Chinese allegedly torching pages of the Quran during a prayer ritual.

She made the remark urging the wing’s members to defend Islam and asked Muslims not be the "silent majority" when their faith is challenged.
