A coalition of 15 NGOs has targeted to gather 10,000 people on New Year’s Eve to demand that the price of oil is lowered to RM1.90 per litre.

Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) chairperson Azan Safar announced this after the coalition launched the “#demand for oil price at RM1.90” pamphlets at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur today.  

Turun, which leads the coalition, will continue with its roadshow, particularly  in the Klang Valley, to gain the rakyat’s support to join them in the gathering at Dataran Merdeka at 9pm on Dec 31.

“For the state level, we leave it to the committees (of every state). We target 10,000 people to  join us at Dataran Merdeka that night,” Azan ( left ) said.

Apart from Turun, the campaign is also supported by PAS Youth, PKR Youth, as well as Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) and Protes.

'The mother of all increases'

Meanwhile, PKR Youth vice-chairperson Fahmi Fadzil said the government should reduce the price of petrol and diesel as soon as possible as the global oil price had fallen sharply.

“The government does not need to wait for six more months to lower the price of oil. We have already made the necessary calculations. Realistically, the price of petrol can be lowered to RM1.90,” Fahmi said.

Jingga 13 coordinator Fariz Musa said the increase in oil prices was the “mother of all increases” as it would lead to prices of other goods increasing as well.

Fariz was referring to the government’s move to increase the price of RON95 petrol twice this year, leading to a 40 sen a litre increase.

“They announced the RON95 petrol hike of 40 sen a litre, but they announced a reduction of only four se n a litre on Dec 1, under the new managed float method,” he said.
