Popular British toy store Hamleys Malaysia has taken disciplinary action against its staff member who sidelined an actor’s daughter from employment for wearing the tudung (headscarf).

“From our investigation, it has been found that it was a mistake by a new staff member who does not have the authority to interview or hire workers, and who gave the wrong information to Malay film director and actor Rosyam Nor’s daughter.

“Disciplinary action has been taken on this worker”, the company posted on Facebook yesterday.

The statement was in reference to the complaints posted by Rosyam on Twitter last Thursday.

The best male actor for 2003 tweeted his disappointment after his daughter had been allegedly asked to take off her tudung if she wanted to work at Hamleys.

The toy store also issued a public apology to the actor and denied having such a policy where women employees were not allowed to wear the tudung .

“The management apologises over this issue and regrets the incident as well as what has spurred from it. We (the management) hope that Rosyam, his daughter and Muslims are not hurt by the incident.

“We do not have any company police on where women workers are not allowed to don the tudung . We welcome all who want to work with us regardless of race and religion,” the toy store said.

Hamleys is the oldest toy shop in the world and has been known as the one of the best toy retailers. It derives its name from its Founder William Hamley and was founded in 1760.

Hamleys was bought over by Groupe Ludendo, a toy retailer based in France, for £60 million in 2012. It is now an international brand with branches in Jordan, India, Russia, Dubai and Norway.

Hamleys’ store in Malaysia is located at the One Utama shopping complex.

'Apology accepted'

Meanwhile, Rosyam has since accepted the apology from Hamleys and hopes that there would not be a repeat of the incident.

“I accept their (Hamleys') apology and I hope that this incident does not repeat itself,” he told Malaysiakini today.

When asked if his daughter will apply again to work at Hamleys, he quipped, “I am not sure if my daughter wants to seek a job there or not, I have not asked her yet.”

Rosyam stressed that he has no intentions of "blowing up" the issue, and expressed hope that more jobs are given to tudung -clad women and teens.
