‘Playing on racial issues and tension will backfire’

YOURSAY ‘More and more M’sians just want a united and inclusive country.’

DAP: Dr M, Umno the beggars, not Malays

Don’t just talk: DAP Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, you have the respect of non-Malays for having the guts to stand up against the former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is the cause of the miseries facing Malaysians, due to 22 years of abuse and corrupted legacies left behind.

However you are wrong on the fertility rate figure, which should be three to one instead of one and half times more than the Chinese, who believes in a two-child policy due to high cost of living.

Malaysia will have a better future with more educated Malay youths like you and Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud and others who dare to speak out without fear or favour, not only in urban towns but Kampong/Felda villages.

Wsoi: All this that's backfiring on Umno is the result of Isma and Perkasa playing on racial tensions.

We Malaysians are fed up of the stories of incredible level of lying and cheating. We from all races must be united and inclusive to build a progressive country.

Nobody believes nowadays that playing on racial issues will benefit the country. Those who play up racial issues, the public from all races will bury you forever.

Now is the dominance of the Malay majority not the Malay minority in Umno as in the past. Malays will always dominate our country's political landscape.

We want the majority Malay to grow with other races, for together we grow. We are behind as a nation after 30 years because it is only the political leaders and cronies that grow, not the rest of the majority.

FellowMalaysian: Will leaders of calibre from MCA, Gerakan and MIC who still have some semblance of dignity and self-respect, please rebut DAP Seputeh MP Teresa's Kok's very embarrassing and damaging claim of what former Gerakan chief Lim Keng Yaik said in 2008?

Whoever thinks that what Mahathir said about Malays having to beg for Chinese votes has any inkling of truth, they must be out of their minds.

Victor Johan: The Malays are not begging the non-Malays. The Malays already make up the big majority in the public sectors; heading almost all the chairmanships of the GLCs through the elite Malays, and make the majority employed in the police enforcement and the country's defence force.

It's the Umno Malays and the elite Malays and the Umno-linked NGOs that are now troubled and inflicting fear into the Malays, and getting their racial coalition political parties leaders to do the same with the non-Malay citizens.

It's now the majority Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sarawakians, Sabahans and all the minority ethnicities that are going to see Umno and affiliates be ousted in the administration of the country and this what Umno Melayus and its goons fear.

Sleepy: Umno, MCA, MIC and other parties in BN believe falsely that they represent Malaysia's races and religions. The reality is they are losing support from the particular group they think they represent, hence I agree with Zairil.

The point is whether you want to remain an Umno Malay or a progressive Malay, which reminds me of what Dr Martin Luther King said: "Judge not the race/looks of a person rather the content of his character".

Anonymous #81257759: If the Umno government had done a good job, there would be no need to beg; the democratic system would automatically support them. Being the leaders, they must listen and understand the people's needs, and take care of them.

Mahathir's comment actually reflects that he is not only racist, but also his mentality seems like he is living in the ancient age of monarchs, where the people must beg the government.

Sound Mind: When we are lost in jungle we keep going in different directions hoping to find the way out. In the confusion, we get lost deeper in the jungle.

Probably that is the case of Mahathir. I am actually confused with his contradictory statements from time to time. Anyway I believe more and more people have stopped listening to him.

What of Umno's rallies in 1946, ask UM8

Sirach: University students are the future leaders of a country. Political awareness and indeed activism by them is to be encouraged - indeed lauded.

Student activism has been a catalyst for change in democracies the world over. Such activism demonstrates that the nation is nurturing a youth capable of independent thought who want their voices to be heard, and not mere sheep waiting to do the bidding of political masters, which is clearly what Dr Mahathir and his ilk want.

They should just ignore Mahathir's feeble attempt at citing religion to criticise them. This man has lost all credibility as the voice of reason for a better Malaysia. In fact, truth to tell, criticism from him is akin to a pat on the back from right-minded Malaysians.

Not Confused: As usual, the current batch of so-called leaders (and previous ones too) have convenient memories about their actions in the past. No one really takes any of them seriously anyway. They bumble on in the style of the 1950-69's. Who cares? They are all dead in the water.

Spinnot: This incident happened in 1996 when Dr M was the PM: "Apcet mob was organised by government, says former Umno Youth leader.

Lionheart: Bravo UM8. You make right thinking Malaysians so, so proud of you and they hold you in high esteem. Your parents are comforted by your endeavour and executions. Thanks for making your stand clear, heard and seen, and speaking out for the majority of the rakyat.

Malaysian 53: Mahathir has selective memory. He cannot be a factor in any serious discussion because he cannot remember truths, history and what he and Umno did before.

Perhaps the 1946 demonstration was too long ago for him to remember but what about the demonstrations he himself used to trim the powers of the sultans in Malaysia?

Didn't he address mass rallies all over the country? I remember the one we attended in Batu Pahat in support of his Umno government.

His daughter was hoping he would support the "Eminent 25" but sadly for her, he does not even remember those in the group who served him well.

Sorry, Marina unlike you, I have no problem being critical of the man I once revered but realised he has become one of the biggest problems our beautiful nation is facing. Hope you can understand if many of us are with you but with not your dad.

RR: Why is 'demonstration' a bad word in Malaysia? Many changes for good were made and are being made in the world over through peaceful demonstrations, to drive home a point that often fell into the deaf ears of the powers to be.

Mohican: The Quran also teaches people not to be involved in corruption, cronyism and self- enrichment beyond limit; and at the expense of the poor and downtrodden.

Remember, poverty is the worst form of violence and many poor Malays and other Malaysians live in abject poverty while others through their connections make billions of ringgit/dollars through wheeling and dealing. Is this worse than demonstrating for one's rights?

StopMonkeying: All fair minded and right thinking Malaysians who love our nation must rise up, voice out and remain united. We must not allow the few selfish and wicked extremists destroy the very fabric of our national unity.
