Turun, which is organising a rally to demand lower fuel prices on New Year’s Eve said it is not behind a pamphlet ridiculing an Islamic programme to be held at the same place that night.

Turun – or its full name Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup – is accused on social media of spreading the pamphlet to get people to attend the rally instead.

"We deny that we are behind the spread of these pamphlets," it said on its Facebook page.

Instead, it said "desperate quarters" distributed the fake pamphlets to deflect the rakyat’s frustrations over fuel prices.

The picture pamphlet circulated on social media said the Malam Cinta Rasul (Love the Prophets) programme, also to be held at Dataran Merdeka, will disrupt the fuel price protest.

"Can loving the prophets programme reduce the price of oil? Ask yourselves," the pamphlet reads.

The pamphlet also features the logos of all Pakatan Rakyat parties, Turun’s logo, as well as the logos of other NGOs.

Turun is expecting 10,000 people to gather on New Year’s eve to demand that the government reintroduce fuel subsidies at 30 sen per litre, to bring RON95 pump prices to RM1.90 per litre.

The government removed all fuel subsidies last month.

Malam Cinta Rasul is organised by the Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras, in collaboraition with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and hopes to attract 10,000 people.

The programme will feature famous preachers like Habib Syech Abdul Qodir As Seggaf and Habib Ali Zaenal Abidin from Indonesia, who is known for the song ‘Ya Hanana’.
