Police have once again attempted to arrest cartoonist Zunar, this time over his political cartoons titled ‘Ros in Kangkung Land’.

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, said a group of 20 policemen from the Brickfields police station “threatened” to arrest him today.

The cartoonist was at the relaunch of the book in Brickfields this morning when the police showed up.

Speaking to Malaysiakini , he said the police told him that they wanted to arrest him and seize his books because the event and the books had no permit.

The cartoonist said the police told him that he will be arrested should he proceed with the book launch.

“But I told them that there is no need for a permit because the event is held on private premises,” he said.

Zunar also said that his book is not even banned.

He said that he will be speaking to his lawyers on the next course of action as he will be leaving for Geneva on Monday.

Launch foiled, again

Following the police visit, Zunar decided to cancel the event.

The book was supposed to have been launched this Valentine's Day, but the police had confiscated copies of the book from a lorry that was en route to the launch site.

'Ros in Kangkung Land' features a collection of more than 140 cartoons that touch on current issues and personalities such as the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, the Sedition Act, shopping and golfing by Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor, jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, and the goods and service tax (GST).

The government has previously banned seven of his other titles on the grounds that the contents were “detrimental to public order”.

Two titles 'Cartoon-O-Phobia' and 'Conspiracy to Imprison Anwar' are also being investigated under the Sedition Act.
