Two activists who were arrested for four days over the Kita Lawan rallies were asked about the rally organiser's identities and source of funding.

Mandeep Singh told Malaysiakini this was the focus of investigations when he and fellow activist Adam Adli was questioned.

"They asked who the organisers were, and who is funding (Kita Lawan)," he said.

Mandeep and Adam were detained on Saturday after a small gathering in Kuala Lumpur to protest against the jailing of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

They were released on bail at about 4pm.

Despite being arrested on Saturday, the police only recorded their statements yesterday.

Adam said that before being questioned, he and Mandeep had nothing to do but sleep and eat.

"We just slept and woke up. We got bored so we practiced shooting rubber bands," he said.

Frivilous reasons

Their lawyer, Melissa Sasidaran said it the remand process was an abuse of power, intended to punish than to complete investigations.

"Police actually stopped questioning yesterday at 4PM, when there was only one statement left for Adam. They could have completed it yesterday itself and there wouldn't be any reason to detain them last night.

"They gave reasons that they had to investigate broken flower pots, busses being vandalised, these are all not reasons for remanding someone and depriving them of their liberty," she said.

She said a person can only be remanded if they are a flight risk, or if there is a special circumstances that warrants their detention.

Mandeep and Adam are being investigated under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act and Section 143 of the Penal Code.

Besides Kita Lawan, Mandeep was also questioned about his involvement with Bersih, while Adam was questioned on the ' Red Pencil' protest organised by Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm).

In another development, Subang PKR division member S Jayathas was also nabbed today while having his statements recorded.
