Pakatan Rakyat has sought to refer Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar to the rights and privileges committee of the Dewan Rakyat for trespassing on the privileges of a parliamentarian.

DAP parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang today sent a notice to the speaker asking for the IGP to be referred to the committee in order to determine if Khalid had violated Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar's parliamentary privileges by arresting her over a speech she made in the house.

The notice was received by the office of speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia and Pakatan will now await Pandikar's ruling on the matter.

Non-MPs can also be referred to the committee as long as they are considered to have violated the privileges accorded to an MP.

"This does not only concern Lembah Pantai (Nurul Izzah) but also concerns the institution (of Parliament)," Lim said.

'Trigger-happy'

In his notice, Lim stressed that nothing in Nurul Izzah's parliamentary speech had breached the four special areas for which an MP will not be able to claim immunity for.

"The IGP must not be allowed to be trigger-happy and violate even the privileges of MPs," he said.

The areas concerned are the position of the national language, bumiputera quotas and the special position of the Malay rulers.

"The IGP must not be allowed to be trigger-happy and violate even the privileges of MPs," he said.

Nurul Izzah was present at the press conference during which PAS parliamentary whip Mahfuz Omar expressed his party's support for the move.
