Kita Lawan is organising a protest in Kuala Lumpur against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on May 1st, which is Labour Day.

The group consists of political parties, civil societies, non-governmental organisations, university students, workers and young professionals.

This will be the third rally organised by Kita Lawan since opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sentenced to five years' jail by the Federal Court for Sodomy II on Feb 10.

 

“Over 120 arrests have been made of politicians, academicians, lawyers, activists and journalists.

"But the young are not afraid and will continue to hold such rallies to bring hope to the people that the present situation will change,” the Kita Lawan secretariat said in a statement today.

 

It also noted that various exposes such as on 1MDB, and private jets as well as others, were proof of wastage and weaknesses in the Najib administration.

 

It also alleged the inspector-general of police was abusing his powers and the younger generation is rightly battling these issues.

 

“Today is the first day of GST. Previously those who do not pay income tax now are being taxed. Ordinary citizens have to reduce their expenditure in view of rising costs.

"However  the country's leaders live in luxury and spend the country’s wealth,” they claimed in the statement.

It urged the people “to fight back” do more than complain, and come to Kuala Lumpur for the May 1st Kita Lawan GST rally.

“What is certain the month of April will be an eye-opener for all Malaysians regarding the discrimination of GST. The younger generation will rise and fight for the welfare of all Malaysians,” the Kita Lawan secretariat added.
