YOURSAY ‘Here even time (the Parliament clock) can be made to stand still.’

Sedition Act amendments passed in wee hours

Anonymous_40f4: What is so urgent about these draconian laws that they need to be passed at 2 o’clock in the morning?

Is Umno Baru-BN in panic mode or are they insane?

Behsaikong: Three times in one working week, the clock in Parliament was stopped (here in Malaysia even time can be made to stand still), and the poor MPs (from both sides) had to cast their votes at well past midnight. This is democracy?

Out of Time: There should be a law that makes it illegal to pass laws so late at night (or in the wee hours of the morning). Only thieves and robbers should be working at those times.

Odin: It won't be long before Malaysians are brainwashed to believe that 2 + 2 = 5, and that there are no ungood things but all are doubleplus good.

Everyone will be like an automaton, with no emotional feelings, no desire for sex (for copulation is forbidden), has no knowledge of the real past (for history has been rewritten), exists only to serve the Inner Party, and is watched every minute of the day through telescreens positioned everywhere.

Welcome to Oceania a.k.a. Malaysia. At the GE14, make sure you vote for the Inner Party. War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. Big Brother has spoken.

Watchmen: It looks like we going back to the future, pre-Merdeka. Giving up independence because of MPs without any love for our country but only money.

Relevancy: Up to the court to decide? Well, use the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) to detain a person with no bail, and then charge him or her with sedition.

That will ultimately incarcerate the person in jail without seeing the light of justice.

ABS: Hubris, arrogance and paranoia - they have convinced themselves that a danger to their selfish existence equates to a danger to the populace.

Basically: It's bad enough to U-turn on a promise, but to U-turn and go even further just shows what the 1Malaysia PM is really made of.

Worldly Wise: So Malaysiakini can now be lawfully blocked with the new Sedition Act. But can they?

Anticonmen: Articles 5, 8, 9 and 10 have been reneged yet again. Liberty, equality and freedom are the pillars of this democracy. These have been trampled to suit the selfishness of the elite and protect the interests of a few.

All hinges now on whether the Malays, especially the Malay youth, have realised and woken up to their democratic rights in sufficient numbers.

Notice, they push such laws way after the last elections and way before the next so that people will forget. What you need is a more powerful force to trample the powerful elite.

Anonymous #19098644: This minority government with only 47 percent of the votes cast but forming the government based on disproportionate gerrymandering has shown that it will not respect the will of the majority but will do whatever it takes to stay in power.

This includes attacking the rights of the people, fiddling with the constitution and undermining and creating divisions within the country.

They will find that in years to come that setting a fire on a wooden boat so that they can keep warm will end up in them being burnt together with the rest of the people in the boat. I cry for my country.

MPs give themselves a RM9,500 pay hike

Anonymous_4196: Has Malaysia progressed in the last seven years? Do we have better education? Has our country's finances increased? Do the rakyat feel safer? Has the government curbed illicit outflows? Has the government curbed corruption?

Can we really say our judiciary is truly independent when almost all high-profile cases do not seem to have fair verdicts? Then, why should the taxpayers feel that MPs deserve a pay raise?

Hope 4 a Better Msia: This is the right move. Good people must be attracted to serve the rakyat, and they must be adequately compensated. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys, thieving monkeys some more.

Swipenter: Salaries and allowances are loose pocket change for many MPs. They can earn hundreds, if not thousands, of times more doing ‘extracurricular’ deals and work beyond their call of duty.

Katusha: How many and who among the opposition MPs objected to the pay rise, we wonder? Just when the ordinary rakyat are hard hit with the tremendous rise in cost of living due to the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).

Prudent: This is daylight robbery of the rakyat. With GST and the cost of living going up for the rakyat, instead of setting a good example of financial discipline, they voted themselves a huge pay rise.

Thana55: They keep telling us that inflation is only 3 percent and then they give themselves a pay rise of 40 percent?

At least if they had performed in making Malaysia a better place, there could be some justification for the pay rise, say 20 percent at maximum.

But here is a case of Malaysia going backwards and heading to the cliff. If these guys were working for a multinational corporation (MNC) at least 70 percent of them would have been sacked.

Just_A_Rakyat: I'm afraid this will set a precedent for the civil servants to demand a raise, followed by the private sector.

Blackmoon: There are 89 Pakatan MPs and 133 BN MPs in Parliament. If all the Pakatan MPs reject the pay hike, it will put the BN MPs to shame if they did not follow suit.

Are all the Pakatan MPs willing to take that bold step and show the rakyat they are with them during these hard times?

KKKSSS: I don't agree to pay rises across the board. Those MPs who said GST had little or no impact (some claim things are even cheaper with GST) on goods should get a stay on pay, and those who said "cheaper" have their pay cut. (Also allowances cut, too.)

Taking this as a yardstick, can businesses use the same quantum in pay increase (39-57 percent) to increase prices?

Odin: Prices have gone up due to the GST. So these people upped their salaries. But how do the ordinary workers out there up theirs?

Gaji Buta: Wow, worked three nights past midnight, get RM9,500 raise. Not bad.
