Heavy rain yesterday failed to dampen PAS’ anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rally at Padang Merbuk in the heart of Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

   

Roughly 3,000 supporters showed up in starting 4pm to await PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s address on the highly criticised 6 percent consumption tax implemented on April 1.

The PAS president arrived at 8am and spoke for about half an hour.

20 minutes into his speech heavy rain poured, but the crowd refused to budge.

Armed with umbrellas, raincoats or just cloth, they braved the storm to protest the tax that they say is oppressive.

Critics are upset with the government for pushing ahead with the tax that they say will lead to rising living costs, while Putrajaya itself has been accused of being wasteful and irresponsible with public funds.

The rally yesterday was accompanied by prayers, followed by a festive mood with stalls and activities.

Among those at the ulama-led rally were deputy president Mohamad Sabu, mursyidul am deputy Ahmad Yaakob dan central committee member Nasruddin Hassan.
