Umno unity brings tears to Malacca CM's eyes

The "unprecedented unity" shown at all levels in Umno has brought tears to Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron.

He said the atmosphere at the supreme council meeting chaired by Umno President Najib Abdul Razak was good.

All the leaders who attended the meeting candidly exchanged their views, he was quoted by Oriental Daily as saying.

Idris ( photo ), who is also a supreme council member, said he was touched by the unity shown at the meeting.

At a press conference yesterday, he said this when asked about former leaders pressing Najib to step down as the prime minister.

Since last month, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been calling for Najib’s resignation.

Mahathir warned that Umno and BN would be defeated in the next polls should Najib continue to lead.

Overcome tough challenges

Idris said it is a "healthy phenomenon" to see a former leader pressuring his successor to step down.

However, he said, the incumbent leader will turn out to be a good leader if he can overcome the tough challenges.

"We believe that with all the support he gets from the leadership from each level, the incumbent leader can become a good leader," Idris added.

"Let us remember the history and deal with this crisis calmly. We will find the best solution," he said.

As the country's biggest political party, Idris said, Umno should not break apart when instigated by certain quarters.

He stressed that no country in the world will be prosperous, progressive and stable when its leaders are forced to step down due to baseless allegations.

As such, he hoped that the country and the party will not be affected by such allegations.

Idris also suggested that Umno should fully utilise its three million members to combat the incorrect allegations and accusations made by netizens, adding that all should commit themselves to convey the right information to the people.

He also warned that the government would take stern action against the civil servants who spread incorrect information online.
