Two-term limit - best to start with PM’s post

YOURSAY ‘Why not limit the PM’s term first and set an example?’

DAP rep backs Umno's bid to limit Penang CM's term

Sabahan: Tanjung Bungah assemblyperson Teh Yee Cheu is someone who has not thought this out thoroughly. If he supports this motion to limit the term of the CM, he must give a clear explanation.

Umno sought this motion with bad intentions. Lim Guan Eng has led the state very well and they fear that with him continuing to lead the state, Umno-BN's chances of getting back control of the state will be practically nil.

Teh should discuss this with his colleagues before declaring support for Penang Umno’s proposal for a two-term limit to the CM’s post.

P Dev Anand Pillai: If this is the case, why not limit the term of PM first and set an example?

We don't see Umno Malays object if there is an Umno-compliant chief minister (CM) like those from compliant parties like MCA and Gerakan.

The Westminster model allows for the PM or the CM to continue as long as they have the support of the people and their party. Come on folks, they just can't stand a CM who has the guts to stand up to them.

Anonymous#007: There are many reasons why a country sets terms for leaders. The most important is that it is an effective measure against corruption and dictatorship.

Opposition party Penang Umno does not have any good reason to propose that, except to create problems for a very effective, clean, just and progressive ruling government/party in Penang.

Given all the allegations of corruption - not to mentions the mega sums - involving Umno, would it not be more urgent to set a term limit for Umno representatives in the state and federal government?

Given the severity of 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) alleged corruption scandal, wouldn't it be more urgent, and more effective, to propose that the PM cannot be finance minister as well?

Snake-in-the-Grass: It should be the case in all of Malaysia. Put it into practice. Surely there are thousands of talented people around, in Penang and even in Sarawak (or are there)?

Lim Guan Eng is a good man, a great man - but he is still a man. Let him have a new life after two terms as CM.

He can always hang around to give advice to the new CM (if needed) and also find time to play with his children and soon-to-come grandchildren. After all, what's life if you offer it to people who don't appreciate you?

Anonymous #19098644: The federal boys should start by making a constitutional amendment to limit the PM's term for two terms only and then the state assemblies should follow.

If MCA and Umno agree to table the amendment in Parliament, then good on them. If not, it shows that they are nothing but hypocrites.

I used to think that MCA was filled with nincompoops, but now I know every party including the DAP has its share, too, with people like Teh.

Start with terms limits for the PM first then we can talk about the states and not the other way around. Why don't Umno also submit the same proposal for Pahang, Sabah or Negri Sembilan?

Motorcyclist: The two-term idea came from DAP themselves before they won power. Those who are asking YB Teh to resign, please self-exterminate.

Thorns revealed in Najib's rosy picture

Ferdtan: The Umno supreme council meeting was obviously well-controlled by PM Najib Razak’s faction. It is not easy to question the incumbent; he or she would be shouted down.

Woe betides that member/members for the politics we play is no child game; and vengeful politics is not a matter for faint hearts.

No, we don’t expect the supreme members who were present at the meeting to show their hands if they were not sure of winning. No Umno leader would dared to take that fateful path; the way that only lead to Sungai Buloh prison, not unlike Anwar Ibrahim’s fate.

Round one to Najib.

Uncle_Prakash: 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is the most investigated company in the history of Malaysia. The auditor-general, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the people in Finance Ministry task force have all started investigation papers and probes into 1MDB.

The only bodies that have not started investigation in 1MDB seem to be Bomba and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

If there is impropriety or money lost, it will be found out. And the reason why government is comfortable to let so many parties investigate is perhaps they are confident that they can trust the audited accounts by the international firms.

That said, I do hope that 1MDB opens its mouth more and tell us what it can tell. Not engaging us makes everyone suspects the worst as we are trained to think "no news is bad news".

Wsoi: I’d appreciate someone could list down the past 30 years scandals and reveal how public fund was used to bail out some companies.

We may find out both Dr M and Najib are fundamentally similar - the only difference is possibly the methods used and the quantum involved.

It’s no point changing certain parts of an old car. Other parts will be no good for long. Instead, change the whole car.
